Making Animation: Drawing A Surreal FlipBook (Part 1)

Making a hand-drawn animated loop while talking about 2D animation techniques and random thoughts. Drawn on paper with pens and markers:

I’m going to be recording the entire animation process from start to finish.

This loop will be uploaded to Patreon as a pack of 9 surreal looping backgrounds.

You can edit these animated backgrounds in your own videos, streams, social media posts, or live VJ performances.

While I did sketch out a loose 8 panel storyboard, this 10 second loop will be mostly animated using straight-ahead animation, rather than planning out all the key frames and adding inbetweens.

Drawing one frame after another allows for abstract shapes to flow out with a dreamlike quality. I’m relying more on intuition than careful planning. We’ll see how it goes.

This “Making Animation” format will be an ongoing series, documenting the progress of various Animation projects I’m working on, with a sprinkle of animation tips throughout.
