I had about a month to make this 5 min video. Because of the tight deadline, we had to find creative ways to fill the space while still keeping the visuals captivating.

I used a lot of animation loops and art assets from my library of visuals, tweaking and remixing them to make new compositions. I also experimented with analog glitch visuals and combined these retro glitched-up visuals with the 2D animation.

The animation style in this video is: psychedelic 2D animation, psytrance, trippy, sci-fi, tunnels, dancing characters, FX, surreal, and much more.

I started learning how to animate when I was 19 in 2009. What started out as an experiment with flipbook animation quickly turned into an obsession. For the next 4 years I was living as a hermit in my parent’s basement when all my friends were off to college. I got Richard William’s “The Animator’s Survival Kit” and learned from other books and resources on the internet.

Being self-taught suited my shy nature. But the biggest problem was figuring out how to actually make money from animation. I knew I wanted to be an animator, I just didn’t know how to survive off the art form.

After dabbling with flipbooks for a few years, I got a Wacom drawing tablet and began animating digitally with software like TVPaint.

As an introvert, I’ve often found it hard to connect with people through language. It felt like I was always stuck inside my own head. I didn’t start talking until I was 3.

I learned that visual art allows us to get ideas out of our heads and into the world for others to experience.

Animation allows us to project dreams onto a surface for others to experience and connect with.

After a couple years of learning in isolation, I submitted an animation to a contest for The Flaming Lips, and this got my career started as a freelance animator, doing more music videos that would air on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which opened the door to doing tour visuals for bands like Incubus and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I make a minimum of 120 animated loops a year, because I have a Patreon where I post at least 9 loops every month for subscribers to use in their own videos.

I’ve taken this frame-by-frame animation work into the world of live visuals, providing animated loops for VJ’s, musicians, and creative professionals of all backgrounds to spice up their content through the timeless quality of 2D Animation.

I’m starting to learn Blender now, so there’s even a couple 3D loop experiments in this compilation. But 2D animation will always be my passion – the goal with 3D is ultimately to use it as a tool in service of the 2D aesthetic (using it for things like texture mapped backgrounds or vehicle animation).

I made Word Salad in 2011 when all my friends were off to college. I was basically a recluse living in my parent’s basement. Lots of social anxiety and watching one of my best friends lose his mind to schizophrenia.

During this time, I also worked on animation for Word Salad for 16 months. It’s 7:30 minutes of animation drawn on over 1,000 note cards.

I scanned the pictures into my crappy dell computer and edited the video with the the terrible program Windows Movie Maker – which crashed constantly, erasing hours of work.

In this video you’ll see my process for animating goopy clouds and smoke style animations.

Animating has a weird way of warping time, because you’re thinking frame by frame in slow motion. It takes so many hours to animate only a few seconds worth of movement. The result is that real life gets sped up, while the animation world you’re making moves at a snail’s pace.

It’s also interesting that whatever subject matter you’re drawing or focusing on, you notice it a lot more in real life. While I was animating clouds, I was ultra aware of all the nuances and differences in shapes and color of the clouds in the sky.

When I would go on my daily walk, I would almost feel overstimulated trying to take in all the cloud shapes in the vast sky. There’s something humbling about looking into the infinite sky and realizing you’re only seeing an incredibly small portion of all the sky and clouds that exist at this moment in time on planet earth.

These strange animations are mostly collected from animated music videos I’ve done over the past 14 years. As you can see, most of the narrative tends to be more surreal and weird, flowing like a dream.

I’m inspired by how scenes in a dream can morph into something else, but the dreamer doesn’t even question it (unless in a lucid dream). The highly emotional and illogical nature of dreams likely has something to do with the prefrontal cortex being less active during REM sleep.

My favorite thing about hand drawn animation is you can animate anything.

Language fails at truly showing anyone else what’s inside your head. Words are too interpretive. In this sense, no matter how much you reach out to someone, we’re all alone in our heads with our own unique experiences.

Animation allows you to bypass language and project your dreams onto a screen for other people to see. The bad thing about animation is it takes 100 hours to animate like 1 second of footage.
