How to get Freelance Work using ONLY Email

Freelance Artist Tips: How To Get Freelance Work Using Only Email.

Email marketing advice for becoming a freelancer in the digital age. If you want to work from home, you’ll need to know how to send an email and how NOT to send emails. Here’s some basic advice I’ve learned for cold emailing possible clients for music videos.

This is geared mainly towards graphic designers, animators, and other visual artists, but the overall strategy can be applied to email marketing for most other content.

QUICK TIPS:

  1. Include an online portfolio showcasing your best work, or work that is similar to what your client needs (i.e. don’t send your death metal poster design to a children’s book author).

2. Be concise and to the point (don’t ramble). Ask questions. Don’t throw out prices in the first email – let the conversation grow organically. They have to respond to your email in the first place before you  can start talking numbers.

3. If you get the job, include a contract and charge a certain portion of the budget upfront (I do 50% up front).

I hope this helps. I’m still learning new things about being an independent artist all the time.

Let me know in the comments other topics you’d like me to cover! I’d also like to hear your own experiences with freelancing.
